Rajko Šajnovič, 69 years old, Kočevje, Slovenia.
Rajko Šajnovič has been a Roma activist for 39 years, as well as a Roma cultural creator, a freelance artist and a great man who cares. He is no politician and does not want to be. He is not a member of any Roma society and does not want to be. He is not a member of the Roma Association of Slovenia, not the Council of the Roma Community of Slovenia, nor the Forum of Roma councilors of Slovenia, and he does not want to be. He is not a member of any political party and does not want to be, because he does not like their actions or politics.
“I am still the oldest Roma creator, activist, independent fighter for Roma rights, independent representative of Roma patients’ rights, a member of the Society for the Protection of Animals of Slovenia …
I am a Roma and I am proud that is what I am and what I will be: I am a poet, writer, translator, story-teller and a free artist, benefactor, humanist, website commentator, website blogger, honest, kind, fair and friendly, to true friends and good people who have their heart in the right place. My formula was and will always be to find a common understanding, compromise, help, solution, coexistence, language and dialogue. That’s what I like. For this reason, I am happy and proud. I love writing and my old computer, which understands, appreciates and respects me. My computer knows that I am a good person, that I am kind, working and creative – that I am honest and just. It is not my fault that many people – Slovenians and Roma – do not like me. He knows that my words are guilty of expressing critical views on the current social situation. I once loved those words: independence, autonomy, democracy, the social state of Slovenia … Have not these words lost their meaning long ago? “
