David Tišer (32)
NGO director, actor, lecturer, theatre director, politician, first Czech Roma LGBT activist
David is a person who is seeking new challenges, and his attention to detail and great humour never stop, not even at moments when others would have long since abandoned the field. In addition to being a brilliant human being, he is also an activist and Romani studies and Social work scholar, began organizing celebrations of International Romani Day (8 April), ran for the European Parliament for the Green party, and does many other activities. David Tišer is also known for being first Roma LGBT activist in the Czech Republic. Among others he works as lecturer and is director of theater group Ara Art, which is an association mainly consisting of young Roma people who are involved in art creation with social overlap and realization of this aimed culture events. Their target is to point out the Roma-Czech situation through the theatre. Ara Art association acts most of the time theatrically and musically as well and deals with the exploitation of life’s stories, real situations, theatrical approaches and techniques of working with socially excluded groups of citizens, or with those who have some experience with any kind of social oppression. They try to reflect current situations but lead also to social communication, ideally to a change. David also deals with organizing conferences, discussions and more and more educational projects focused on the population that suffers from social disadvantage.
“My motto” ads David, “is that I am dreaming of a society in which we all can achieve fulfillment. If I had a magic wand, then there would be no antigypsyism, ghettos, racism or segregated schools. Each of us could achieve self-realization in his or her own way.” He says. “I don’t have a magic wand, but something I can do even without one is express my gratitude. The positive things here are frequently not discussed, one tends to criticize and curse. That’s why I thank everybody who is doing his or her best to fulfill my motto. It’s brilliant that each of us uses different methods, each of us focusing on a slightly different subject, to achieve that. I think that is good and that diversity is necessary even in our little fish pond here. That’s what we do a great deal of – we collaborate a lot with others, other nonprofits and other people. We are stronger that way, because we’re not alone. Other people can give you energy too.”
