Community center in Lezha
In 2004,there were very few Roma and Egyptian children who were attending school. The children who were supposed to attend school, instead of this, slept under the river driveway of Drin or collected cans in garbage bins. Several meetings with parents made it possible in 2004, the registration of 25 Roma children in the first grade of the public schools of the city. This was a very pathetic moment that touched the heart of parents and grandparents, while they were watching their children carrying the school bags on their back. After nearly 13 years of work, we have today 190 children from the Egyptian and Roma communities that are attending school up to the ninth grade. The relationship between the children and school has been grately improved thanks to the teachers and “cultural mediators” who work to solve the problems that arise within the school,as well as, to check in the absences, problems within the family, etc. The “pact” among parents has done a miracle, as it has encouraged the motivation and the empowerment of the parents to contribute to the education and integration of their children in the city life.
Due to the support of Lezha municipality, we have managed to have for the first time, 3 girls from Roma and Egyptian community who are attending the University. It is a miracle that today after nearly 13 years, we listen that Roma and Egyptian girls want to become nurses, teachers, while boys want to become an electrician, a mechanic, a doctor. Their eyes require our utmost support to make their dreams come true.
